"Your Vote, Your Voice: Why Every Vote Matters"

Think your single vote doesn't matter? Think again!

Okay, real talk - I used to roll my eyes when adults told me "every vote counts." Like, seriously? My one vote against millions? But then I found out that in 2021, a race in Virginia was decided by literally ONE vote. One person staying home could have changed everything.

Here's what I wish someone had told me sooner:

Your vote hits different in local elections. While everyone's arguing about the president, the people making decisions about YOUR life are getting elected by like 200 people. I'm talking about:

  • The school board deciding if you get mental health resources or if they cut the arts program
  • City council choosing between a new youth center or another parking lot
  • Local officials deciding if there's going to be decent public transportation

Mind-blowing examples:

  • A school board race in my area was decided by 47 votes last year
  • In 2017, they literally had to pull names out of a bowl because a Virginia race was tied
  • Most mayoral races in small towns? Won by less votes than people who follow you on Instagram

Why politicians actually care about young voters:When young people show up, politicians notice. They start talking about student debt, climate change, and job opportunities instead of just complaining about "kids these days."

The math is simple: Skip voting = other people decide your future for you.

Real talk: You're going to be living with these decisions way longer than the 65-year-olds who vote in every election. Make sure your voice is part of the conversation.

Turn 18 soon? Get registered. Still 17? Start paying attention to who's running and what they stand for. Your future self will thank you.

Who decides what:

  • School board = your classes, counselors, and school funding
  • City council = parks, bus routes, youth centers
  • Mayor = community priorities and budgets

Why it matters:

  • Your vote counts more (local races often decided by hundreds, not millions)
  • You can actually talk to these people
  • Changes happen quickly at local level
